Chen Hung-Chou and Chang Kai-Hsien's "Lights": A Masterpiece of Residential Design

Exploring the Unique Design of a Five-Story Residential Space

In a world where architecture and design are increasingly important, the "Lights" project by Chen Hung-Chou and Chang Kai-Hsien stands out. This article delves into the unique features, inspiration, and realization of this award-winning residential space.

The "Lights" project is a five-story building designed to cater to the diverse tastes and preferences of its inhabitants. The designers, Chen Hung-Chou and Chang Kai-Hsien, have partitioned the spaces according to the users' individual tastes, cleverly connecting each area through delicate decorative details. The aim is to create an exclusive life experience for the homeowners, making a clear statement about what home means to them.

What sets this design apart is the use of the house's original high-ceiling advantage to create a spacious atmosphere. Natural woods and marble have been used to decorate the space, with each floor reflecting the preferences of its users. The third and fourth floors, for instance, are designed for a younger generation who prefer a simple, stylish, and slightly industrial loft style. This is a stark contrast to the more traditional preferences of the older generation.

The staircase is a key element in this design, connecting all the floors seamlessly. The original traditional staircase was replaced with a new spiral staircase, creating a refreshing space decoration. LED lamps mounted on the back sides of the stairs provide soft, warm light, making the entire structure look visually light and enhancing the overall design.

The design process was not without challenges. With a five-story terraced house and three generations living under one roof, the designers had to think comprehensively about how to create an exclusive interior environment for the homeowners. Each area needed to demonstrate its unique feature and user's personality, while also providing a relaxed and comfortable living space for the family.

The "Lights" project started in April 2017 in Taiwan and was completed in February 2018. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a testament to the remarkable expertise and innovation of Chen Hung-Chou and Chang Kai-Hsien. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that showcase a high level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

In conclusion, the "Lights" project is a testament to the power of innovative design in creating a unique, comfortable, and functional living space. It is a shining example of how architecture and design can cater to the diverse needs and tastes of different generations living under one roof, while also creating a cohesive and visually stunning home.
